Scientific and Professional Experiences with Radiation: a different Perspective on “Microsieverts” by Matthias I. Horvath

The presentation shows professional experiences of radiation in science, in sports and in the industry.
The first part gave an insight into current nuclear fuel research going to higher burn-ups in NPP’s. Especially the local quantities of fission gases (FG) in the nuclear fuel are of high interest in consideration to the fuel performance and safety issues.

The second part presented the radiation monitoring and prevention organisation of the Swiss National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Protection (FOCP). As an example the radiation monitoring of the Swiss host cities during the EURO 2008 was presented.

The third part gave an insight to a Spanish company which produces nuclear fuel elements for the Spanish NPP’s and also for some NPP’s in the world called ENUSA. The interesting aspect for the students was to show job opportunities for young scientists in this field. ENUSA has a strong section of R&D and is collaborating with international partners and a is participating international research programs.

Then, as the presenter is an active member of Young Generation (YG) he presented the aim and activities of Jóvenes Nucleares (JJNN) and some impressions of the recently held international YG conference called internatioan youth nuclear congress  (IYNC 2008) in Interlaken last September.

The Audience in the Faculty of Physics

After the presentation parts, during the questionnaire fruitful discussions took place where various aspects were discussed, i.e. how about renewable vs. or and nuclear, point of view of YG for the future, how is it to work with “dangerous” materials, etc. At the end, after 1.5h, the audience of around 15-20 people closed the session with an applause for the presenter.
